Working with International Students and Enriching the Learning Environment for All

An International Education Week 2019 workshop

Facilitators: Kristen Chappell, Kathleen Cobb, Andrea Phillipson, and Luciano Santos

Almost 15% of MRU students have international backgrounds, bringing a wealth of experience to the classroom and creating a fantastic teaching and learning opportunity for students and faculty alike. But faculty are not always certain about how to approach this opportunity. A recent MRFA PD Day about supporting international students surfaced a tension that faculty can feel between asking students to adapt to the current postsecondary system and making changes to the system to better include students.

In this workshop, we will continue this conversation and begin unpacking this tension. We will clarify the category “international student” to recognize the variety of ways that students may bring an international background to the classroom. We will consider how faculty can teach effectively when their students have a variety of educational backgrounds, and how they can create welcoming learning environments in which students can learn from each other’s experiences.

Although this is a continuation of a discussion initiated during the MRFA Fall 2019 PD Day, all faculty members are invited to participate. Please join us for what promises to be a rich conversation.

MRU International Education Week is hosted by the Office of International Education.
